After looking at the title of this video, I had
to watch it. A cliff jump and an avalanche are possibly the best combination of
things since Kelly Slater and waves. The jump is all filmed on a few GoPro
cameras which give the footage a real sense of scale and intensity. The
above video shows Matthias
Giraud and his friend Stefan Laude escaping an avalanche off the Aiguille
Croche in Megeve, France while performing a skiB.A.S.E jump.
Matthias Giraud is also known as "Super Frenchie"
and is a professional skier and B.A.S.E. jumper. Along these lines he has a
mission statement which summarises what he is about (if you ask me there are a
lot worse aims in life):
"To promote the sports of skiing and
B.A.S.E. jumping in a professional and humble manner to inspire human
adventure."
Matthais was born in France and grew up skiing on
the slopes of St Gervais-les-Bains. His first major accomplishment was the
first ski B.A.S.E. jump off Mississippi Head on Mt Hood, Oregon. Since then he
has achieved some equally incredible feats which you can read about here.
Giraud set out ski racing, but moved on to free
skiing which was followed by big mountain skiing. He is well known for
combining big mountain skiing with B.A.S.E jumping and has successfully combined
the two at numerous locations across the globe, including a jump of the
Matterhorn in Switzerland (see below).
